School Resource Officer

The Norfolk Police Department staffs a School Resource Officer (SRO) full-time, dedicated to the Norfolk Police Schools and King Philip Middle School. The mission of the SRO is to facilitate relationship-building such that students, faculty, staff, and community members see the SRO as contributing to a positive school climate. This is realized by supporting and fostering the safe and healthy development of all students in the District through strategic and appropriate use of law enforcement resources and with the mutual understanding that school participation and completion are indispensable to achieving positive outcomes for youth and public safety.

Officer Appel has an education and law enforcement background prior to employment with Norfolk Police including a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development/Early Childhood Education and a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice, with extensive experience working with children of all ages and learning abilities.
